  • Exterior Description/Details:

2017 marked the last year of production for the iconic Dodge Viper. During its twenty-plus year production run, it may have gotten slightly more refined, but it never lost its reputation for wild magic and air of danger that accompanied its first public showing at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 1989. The GTS is the most refined of the final generation, and this one is finished in Billet Silver Clearcoat with Gunmetal GTS racing stripes, Venom Hyper Black wheels, red Brembo brake calipers, and side-mount exhaust pipes. The body is constructed of a mix of aluminum and carbon fiber, resulting in the highest power-to-weight ratio in the Viper’s history, as well as being 50% stiffer than earlier generations. But even through the decades, the wide body, the aggressive stance, and unmistakably sinister hood line have remained the same.

Other amenities include a multi-function leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, and a rearview camera. The GTS models benefit from about 40 pounds of extra sound insulation, but don’t worry: there’s not much that will drown out the engine noise. Best to just roll the windows down and enjoy the soundtrack.

  • Engine Description/Details: As striking as the Viper’s styling has been throughout its production run, it was the engine that always drew the most attention. The all-aluminum 8.4-liter V10 sent 645 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission and speed-sensing limited-slip differential. Launches from 0-60 occurred in the low three-second range, assuming you have the requisite skill. A welcome addition to later Vipers was Electronic Stability Control, and the final generation cars added a fifth setting for Rain, while GTS models like this one also received twin-setting Bilstein DampTronic shock absorbers. Four-channel ABS brakes with 14-inch rotors do their best to overcome the brutal acceleration. With the Viper, Chrysler truly delivered on their promise of making a modern day AC Cobra.
