The SL550 spans two distinct eras: the last of the V8 R230 cars through 2012, then the aluminum-intensive R231 from 2013 with its 429-hp 4.7-liter biturbo V8. Across both, the formula held — a folding-hardtop two-seater that works as daily transport and open grand tourer in equal measure. The 2017 facelift brought 449 hp and nine speeds, making the late cars the most complete of the line.
